Homestead — Systems

Architecture, Land & Animals

Systems

How the buildings are constructed, how the land is managed, and how livestock is sequenced in.

Architecture & Construction

Foundation

Poured or fieldstone, with rigid insulation and cast-in conduit stubs — wiring and plumbing runs are planned before the pour, not retrofitted later.

Root Cellar / Safe Room

Built to FEMA P-320 storm-shelter rating, with a disguised, reinforced door so it reads as an ordinary root cellar from the outside.

Interior Finishes

Plaster over insulation, radiant floor heat, and hidden wiring chases — period appearance on the surface, modern systems underneath.

Outbuilding Layout

Every outbuilding does double duty: springhouse (battery/water electronics), smokehouse (comms antenna), barn (solar array/generator), wellhouse (pump vault). See the Overview tab for the full mapping.

Permaculture & Land Design

Zone-Based Design

0
The house — daily-use kitchen garden, herbs.
1
Intensive garden — vegetables, frequent attention.
2
Orchard & small livestock — guild-planted fruit trees, chickens, rabbits.
3
Main pasture & field crops — rotational grazing, less frequent visits.
4
Managed woodland — timber, forage, minimal intervention.
5
Wild land — left unmanaged, observed only.
  • No-till, cover cropping — build soil instead of depleting it season over season.
  • Rotational multi-species grazing — different animals cycle the same pasture for parasite control and even fertility.
  • Guild planting in the orchard — fruit trees paired with support species (nitrogen fixers, pest confusers, ground cover) instead of monoculture rows.

Livestock Sequencing

Each animal layers onto what the last one built — fertility, cleared land, and income compound in order.

Rabbits Bees Poultry Goats Sheep/Cattle Pigs
Rabbits
Lowest capital entry point — fast breeding, manure for the garden from day one.
Bees
Pollination for the orchard/garden already going in, plus honey income.
Poultry
Pest control, eggs, meat — pairs naturally with the orchard guild.
Goats
Brush and scrub clearing ahead of pasture development.
Sheep / Cattle
Main rotational grazing once pasture is established.
Pigs
Targeted land clearing (roots, tough ground) — brought in last, on purpose.
